He loves the opportunity to restore people’s vision through surgery. Born in New Jersey, Michael grew up in a close-knit family of six in the small town of Fletcher, North Carolina. At the age of 7, he decided he wanted to be a doctor because of a quaint nearby Christian hospital where his siblings were born. From the very first day, I knew I needed to do that,” he says. Dr. Seward completed his ophthalmology training in Kentucky and Texas. Over the next two decades, he took extended periods away from private practice in Michigan to provide vision care and surgery for underserved populations—three years in Zambia, Africa, and four years in Papua New Guinea. He and his wife, Jannike, who holds a Ph.D. in special education, now reside in Anchorage, Alaska. “I love fixing things in general, and I particularly love restoring vision,” Dr. Seward says. “I want my patients to know they’re in the hands of somebody who really cares about them.”
